August 9, 1937 - July 16, 2023
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that the family of Barrie (Barry) MacKenzie Morrison announces his passing on July 16, 2023. Barry was 85 years old.
Barry was born August 9, 1937, in Trail and lived in Silverton through his school years and early adulthood. He enjoyed the outdoor life in the Slocan Valley, fishing in the lakes and streams, and exploring the mountains. Most importantly, Silverton is where he met his true love and future wife: Rita Lind. They married in 1956.
Barry worked in the forest industry in BC for most of his life; in New Denver as an assistant ranger with the Forest Service, as a log scaler in Nakusp, as a logging supervisor in Kitimat, and as a woodlands manager in Golden. Later in his career, he was a manager with WorksafeBC in Nelson, specializing in forest industry safety.
Barry is survived by his sons Michael (Colleen) and Ritchie (Ann) Morrison, as well as grandsons Kirk and Quinn Morrison. He was predeceased by his wife Rita, his daughter Melody, and his brother Wayne.
Barry put family first and was a very supportive son, husband, brother, father, and grandfather.
He was a sportsman excelling in golf, baseball, and hockey. He played many golf courses over the years, but the Slocan Lake Golf Course was his home base where he and Rita were a fixture at the course in their retirement years. They both travelled extensively in retirement visiting Europe and Hawaii, as well as enjoying extended trips throughout North America. They were keen campers, exploring beautiful BC in a changing lineup of tents and trailers. Many of these trips incorporated his passion for B.C. history, where he would dig for old bottles in historic and long-gone townsites, recruiting the entire family into the adventure.
He was also a musician throughout his life, playing the clarinet and trumpet. As a young man he was a member of the local Slocan Valley band, the Rhythm Boys. Always striving, Barry was a student of music right up until his passing.
The family would like to extend their utmost appreciation to staff members of Halcyon House in Nakusp who made his later years so enjoyable. He was among friends at Halcyon.
Also, thank you to the dedicated staff at Arrow Lakes Hospital, who made him so comfortable in his final days.
A service will be held at St. Stephens Anglican Church in New Denver on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
