It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerry Penner. He passed away quietly with his family by his side on October 19, 2023.
Gerry was born in Hague, Saskatchewan on June 20, 1934 to parents Ben and Mary Penner. The family moved to Trail in 1942 where Gerry discovered his love of hockey, fishing and the outdoors.
He was hardworking, holding down many jobs, several at the same time. He was a Cominco Firefighter, a BC Ambulance Attendant, a member of Red Mountain Ski Patrol, a roofer, a carpet cleaner representative and a proud member of the World Champion 1961 Smoke Eaters hockey team.
He found the love of his life, Marianne, in 1952 and they were married in 1956. Together they raised 5 children, 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was so proud of his family and was there to help them in any way he could.
Gerry was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Don and Bob, son Bernie, great-grandchildren Reuben and Elliot and his best friend Paul Broman.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Marianne, daughter-in-law Gwen Hubscher, children; Cindy (Dave) Mann, Gerianne (Joey) Hanik, Linda (Glenn) Tod and Sharon Ferebee, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother Bill (Penny) Penner, in-laws Cliff (Candy) Gagnon, Susan (John) Fark, and Phillip Gagnon, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service commemorating his life will be held on Tuesday, October 31 at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 2012 3rd Avenue, Trail, BC, with Father Ben Buela, Celebrant. The service will be livestreamed, and you can view the service live at https://fweb.tv/110871.
