Cheney: Lavern (Vern) along time resident of Montrose passed away peacefully at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital on January 10, 2011. He was born on January 10, 1919 in Bermig, Minnesota.

Vern served overseas for six years, and then worked many years for Cominco at the Power Plant. He and Inez built their home in Montrose and have lived in it ever since, retiring to Fruitvale in 2009. Vern had a terrific sense of humour, and enjoyed fishing and berry picking. In his younger day he was a great ball player, who was invited to the New York Yankee’s baseball camp.

Vern is survived by his loving wife Inez, who he often commented she was “The best wife I’ve ever had.”. He is also survived by his sister Rose Lloyd, and numerous nieces and nephews. Vern was predeceased by his two brothers Francis and Henry, and sister Leona.

A memorial service will be held at the St. Paul’s United Church in Fruitvale on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Liz Bowyer officiating. Al Grywacheski of Personal Alternative Funeral Services “Carberry’s Chapel” is entrusted with arrangements.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Vern’s memory to St. Paul’s United Church, Box 399, Fruitvale, BC V0G 1L0, and would be appreciated by the family.
