Mary Isabel Florence Carver Wright Morris
Izzy Morris
Isabel was born 4 June 1917 and passed away on 14 October 2010 in Trail, B.C. She was predeceased by her husband Jim Morris, her sister Marge, brothers Ralph and Stan, and her nephew Ken Wright. She was the last of that generation whose parents emigrated to Canada and the United States in the early 1900s.
Isabel and her husband Jim are survived by two sons, Gary (Susan) and James (Shirley) and four grandchildren, Stephen, James, Emily, and Megan. The extended family has first cousins in B.C., Alberta, Idaho, Washington State, and California.
Isabel was born in Montreal Quebec grew to a teenager in the Los Angeles California area, relocated to Vancouver and eventually moved to Trail. In Trail she attended high school and was an avid and skilled athlete. Of all the Morris family ball players Isabel had the highest batting average of 600. She went on to work at CM&S as a steno until she married Jim in 1938 and helped build the family home in East Trail.
There began the next phase of her life as a mother rearing her two sons during which she managed to hone her athletic skills firstly in Curling, one B.C. Championship, and later in golf where she was a constant contender for West Kootenay Championship honours.
Once her two sons moved on with their lives, Isabel continued with her curling, golf, and Bridge but also began a long period of community service working as a ‘Play Lady’ and hospital assistant at the Trail Regional Hospital.
She then graduated into what became her favourite phase of life, typical to all mothers – that of being a proud and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren.
Isabel cared for Jim during his final days and once he passed continued to live alone in East Trail until that became too difficult. She then relocated to Silver City Manor where she was wonderfully cared for by Sue Flagel and the Interior Health care workers. Gary and James offer their heartfelt thanks to all of these people and especially to Isabel’s longtime companion Kathleen Partridge who provided her with the support necessary to live as independently as possible.
Mom finished her days in Poplar Ridge at the Trail Regional Hospital where she felt truly secure with the caring and professional staff there. She is buried alongside her month, Emily, in Mountain View Cemetery in her beloved Trail/Rossland. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Poplar Ridge facility in Isabel’s name would be appreciated.
