Preserve Trail’s historic Old Bridge

I recently received two clippings from your paper which, as a former Trailite, I found very interesting.

The first was regarding the 1961 World Champion Smoke Eaters. It was great to see the team picture with names I remembered from the past.  Congratulations to all of them.  I still have a picture of the cake in the shape of the World Cup which was displayed in the window of the West Kootenay Power and Light Co.

The second was a letter regarding the Old Bridge, written by Annhette Gallatin.  Even though I am not a ratepayer, I say save that Old Bridge.  If my memory is correct, it will be 100 years old next year.

When a country like Canada is young, it needs to keep all the old structures it can to create its history.  New Zealand is also a young country.  As I live in Christchurch, I find it heart breaking that so many of our lovely old buildings came down in the recent earthquakes. We didn’t have the choice to keep them.

By all means make the bridge safe but keep it so future generations will have a link to the past.
