B.C. Junior Golf Championship - Svensson simply awesome

Golfer wins back-to-back junior championships
Surrey’s Adam Svensson raises the B.C. Junior Championship trophy in celebration after winning the four-day event at Birchbank Friday by seven strokes over runner up Kevin Kwon.

Adam Svensson, of Surrey, fired a final round 4-under-par 68 to claim his second B.C. Junior Boys’ Championship at Birchbank Golf Club Friday.

Svensson, 17, carded six birdies and just two bogeys on the day giving him an overall total of 14-under-par 274, which was good enough for a seven-stroke victory.

“I really feel great about this win,” said two-time Champion Svensson.  “I’ve been struggling on the greens lately but I putted a lot better today and am happy I was able to turn that around.”

West Kootenay golfers Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake, Brenan Moroney from Rossland-Trail Country Club and Kevin Bennett of Redstone, played well enough to make the cut Wednesday but were well back  on the final day.

Kopan climbed to 58th spot carding a 78 Friday, to go with rounds of 80,75 and 77 for 310 over four days. Moroney tied for 67th shooting an 82 on the final day of competition while Bennett had a tough day shooting 12-over-par, 84 and dropping him to 72nd place.

Next up, Svensson will attempt to defend his title at the Callaway Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA.

“I’m happy to be playing so well early in the season,” added Svensson.  “This win will really give me confidence heading into the Junior Worlds.”

Matching Svensson’s final round 68 to finish in second place at 7-under-par 281 is Kevin Kwon, of Pitt Meadows, who is a member of the B.C. team competing at the Western Canada Summer Games next month in Kamloops.

Finishing in third place at 6-under-par 282 is Conner Kozak, of Vernon, who for the second day in a row had the low round of the day with his 5-under-par 67.  Fourth place goes to Curtis Chan, of Richmond, at 5-under-par 283, who is also a member of Team BC, and in fifth place at 1-under-par 287 is Brian Jung, of Coquitlam.

Representing BC in the Interprovincial Team Championship will be Svensson, Kwon and Kozak.
