Golden finish for local athletes

Tommy Pitman and Rebecca Reid capture gold medals on Saturday.

Tommy Pitman and Rebecca Reid completed a Home of Champions’ golden hat trick on Saturday at the Canada Winter Games.A week after Montrose’s Luke Bertolucci won gold in male hockey in Halifax, Pitman and Reid are bringing home two more gold medals.Pitman, a 17-year-old from Warfield, captured gold in Saturday’s snowboardcross race at the Martock Ski Resort outside of Halifax.Earlier on Saturday, Reid, an 18-year-old from Rossland, joined forces with three other B.C. skiers to win the women’s 4 X 3.75km relay race.Reid wrapped up a solid week, which featured two other top-15 finishes. She was 10th in the women’s sprint races and 11th in the 7.5km freestyle.Meanwhile Pitman, who arrived in Halifax a week ago, had six days to wait before he finally stepped into the starting gate for Saturday’s snowboardcross event.Pitman was second in the time trials, less than two seconds behind Quebec’s Antony Darmour. That result moved him into the quarter-finals where two of each heat’s four racers advance to the semifinals. Again he was second, this time to Nova Scotia’s Josh Drapeau, allowing him to move on to the semifinal heat.Pitman rose to the challenge and won his semifinal race to place him in the final four for a gold medal. He took the gold medal followed by Nakusp boarder Alex Thorp giving B.C. a one-two finish on the podium.Meanwhile at the hockey venue, the B.C. female hockey team finished sixth overall in the 11-team tournament.Fruitvale’s Ella Matteucci picked up an assist in the final game, a 2-1 loss to Manitoba on Saturday.Pitman will be home later this week and will be competing at Red Mountain on the weekend in the local stop of the B.C. Snowboard Provincial Series.Meanwhile, Reid will return to Canmore where she trains at the Alberta World Cup Academy.
