‘Hawks cap league-leading season off with OT win

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks finished their stellar season on a winning note by edging the Nelson Leafs 4-3 in overtime in Fruitvale on Saturday.

The Nitehawks ran away with the KIJHL regular season with 87 points (42-7-3) in 52 games, nine more than their nearest rival, the Castlegar Rebels.

However, Rossland’s Chris Derochie could not catch Richard Hubscher of the Kimberley Dynamiters for the KIJHL scoring championship despite scoring once and adding two assists in the last ‘Hawks game.

Derochie finished with 29 goals and 101 points in 52 games, with teammates Craig Martin of Trail with 96 points (48 goals) and Ryan Edwards of Trail with 95 points (35 goals) ending up in third and forth in league scoring.

The KIJHL playoffs begin Friday with the Nitehawks facing the Spokane Braves, the fourth place team in the Neil Murdoch Division.
