All of Greater Trail and beyond are invited to join Jason Bay and his family at the official ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating Jason Bay Field at Butler Park on Saturday, May 18.
It’s been over four years since Lou DeRosa and the Jason Bay Field committee approached council requesting the former Major League player and Trail native’s name be added to the park.
Along with the city’s support, a select group of dedicated business sponsors came on board to support the project. Surviving the BC lockdown for COVID declared in March 2020 and the destructive storm of January 2021, the business sponsors, Committee members, and city officials have patiently provided their support for the much anticipated ceremony.
“This has been a significant full community effort,” said committee member Keith Smyth. “Now, with a fully upgraded ballpark, complete with modernized lighting and new signage it’s time for an official dedicated ceremonial opening.”
Jason Bay grew up in Trail and was a member of the 1990 Trail Little League team that won the National championship and played in the Little League World Series.
Bay played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues with the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2004, and won the Silver Slugger Award in 2009.
Bay was also a three-time All Star and Tip O’Neill Award winner as the best Canadian player in the majors. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round of the 2000 Major League Draft.
Bay and his wife, Kristen, have three children, and his sister, Lauren Bay-Regula, is a professional softball player who pitched for Team Canada in the 2004 Olympics, and was on the 2008 Olympic team as well.
Jason Bay and his family will be present at the ceremonial opening Saturday at 6 p.m. at Butler Park, with the official ribbon cutting, and a fun activity with local little league players.
