Calvin named Prospects Game conference MVP

For the second straight year the Kootenay stars outshone their Okanagan/Shuswap counterparts in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League All Star Game on Saturday in Fernie.

Over the weekend, the league gathered its top players for an All Star/Prospects event.

Saturday’s All Star Game saw the Kootenay contingent score a lopsided 10-3 win. It marked the second straight year the Kootenay boys have crushed their opponents. Last year the Kootenay Conference won 11-3 in Fruitvale.

It was a different story in Friday night’s Top Prospects Game despite a starring role from Beaver Valley’s Dallas Calvin. The Trail native recorded three goals, one in each period, and was named the Kootenay MVP in a 6-4 loss.

In the All Star Game, the Kootenay team took a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes and added five goals in the final 20 minutes for the lopsided win.

Beaver Valley’s Ryon Sookro and Fernie’s Thomas Abenante each picked up an assist.

Castlegar Rebels forward Ryan Aynsley had two goals and two assists while Rebel teammate Mike Wiest had a pair of goals and was named the Kootenay’s game MVP.
