Local bowlers rolling towards provincials

Berth at nationals at stake.

Three local teams and two singles players will carry the local colours at the Bowl BC five-pin provincial championships.Following playdowns in December and earlier this month, the final players have been selected to compete for a national berth and the B.C. championships set for March 5 in Kamloops.Leading the way will be singles’ players Thomas Plett, who will compete in Bantam Boys, along with Curtis Flack, who will take on the best senior boys in B.C.Three teams out of the Glenmerry Bowl also made it through the regional qualifying, including both the senior boys and girls’ teams.The senior girls’ team features Rebecca Speer, Kennady Keraiff, Katy Fowler, Megan Hawton and coach Sheila Hawton. The senior boys’ team includes Tim Flack, Jeff Horan, David Langille and Joshua Mack. Laurie Flack coaches the team.The third team from the Glenmerry Bowl will compete in the junior boys’ category. Dakota Campbell, Jacob Plett, Gabby Moreau and Cole Thatcher make up the roster coached by Annalia Helgeson.The respective category winners will advance to the national championships, which will be held in Regina and Moose Jaw in May.Meanwhile, the trio of Darren Rich and Ron and Caryl Sandnes, will be heading to Prince George in April to compete in the Coastal Insurance Provincial Open.Competing out of the Okanagan zone, Rich and Ron Sandnes’s men’s team, which includes four other bowlers, survived the 16-game trials to earn the right to represent the region at the provincials against six other teams.Their team features five members of the team that captured the gold medal at the Canadian championships in 2009.Meanwhile Caryl Sandnes is part of the Okanagan ladies’ team headed to the provincial championship.The format at the provincial level features teams playing a round robin with the top four advancing to a stepladder playoff where the third and fourth teams play off and the winner faces the second-place team. The winner of that match must defeat the top qualifier twice to claim the title.This year’s national championships will be held in Langley and Surrey in June.
