Deane Horning is proving to be the super skip in the Kootenay Savings Super League.

Horning led his Maple Leaf Forestry rink to the Super League title last Thursday with a 9-4 win over West Kootenay Mechanical foursome led by Myron Nichol.

The victory gave Horning his fourth-straight Super League playoff title dating back to 2008.

Last Thursday’s finale for the championship was a rematch of the final regular season game where Horning derailed Nichol’s hopes for an undefeated season.

The title game was eerily similar to their previous contest as the fourth end proved to be the downfall of the Nichol team again.

This time it was a draw that racked on a guard allowing Horning to steal four points and take a 6-1 lead.

Nichol made things interesting by narrowing the deficit to 6-4 going into the eighth end. He had shot rock buried on the button but Horning made a nice double take-out and sealed the victory.

The night also featured other playoff matchups.

The third-place game saw Brian LeMoel’s rink jumped out to and early 5-1 lead over Maglio’s men’s foursome skipped by Russ Beauchamp. But Beauchamp, like he has all year, did not give up. He scrambled back to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the final frame. LeMoel regrouped and made a nice draw to win the game 7-6.

The fifth-place game saw Century 21’s Darren Albo and Rob Ferguson’s rink slug it out for nine ends and when the smoke cleared Albo was one point up heading to the last end with the hammer.

However, his draw attempt against two Ferguson rocks came up just light, giving Ferguson the steal and the 6-5 win.

Seventh place was up for grabs between Desire Schmidt’s Performance Fitness rink and Snowpack Outdoors, skipped by Jill Winters from Nelson.

Schmidt jump out to an early lead, and controlled the tempo with some fine hitting, as Performance scored a 7-4 victory.

The last match saw Rose Beauchamp’s Maglio Ladies take on the guest team, skipped by Ken Fines. Beauchamp who is preparing for the B.C. senior ladies provincials later in February, gave the men’s team all they could handle, but in the extra end the wily veteran Fines drew the button to win this game 9-8.
