The Rossland Secondary School golf team teed off on a familiar note Tuesday at the Rossland Trail Country Club.
The team, which has won the zone title in four of the last five years, overcame cold and damp conditions as well as a field of seven school teams to finish in top spot in the season-opening event.
The RSS squad, which includes Brenan Moroney, Tyler, Nathan and Braden McKay and Jeff Ashton, posted a total of 345 to win the event by eight strokes over Grand Forks Secondary School.
Each school team is made up of five players with the four best scores counting towards the team’s final tally.
RSS was led by Tyler McKay, who finished first overall with a round of 77, and Moroney, whose round of 80 left him tied for second with Jordan Hoodikoff of GFSS.
Braden McKay was sixth overall with an 87 and Ashton posted a 101 total for the Rossland scores on Tuesday.
Teams from Creston’s Prince Charles Secondary, L.V. Rogers from Nelson, Stanley Humphries Secondary School out of Castlegar, Nakusp Secondary and Trail’s J.L. Crowe joined RSS and GFSS in the tournament.
The Crowe teams had strong performances from James Booth, who finished tied for ninth with an 88, and Ryan Fullerton, who carded an 89. Alex Rugg with a 92 and Ryan Page with a 98 rounded out the Crowe card.
The zone circuit heads to Creston on May 2 and Christina Lake on May 12.
