RTCC golfers dominate

Trail golfers continue to shine on the West Kootenay junior golf and high school tours.

Kevin Bennett playing out of the Rossland Trail Country Club (RTCC) led a field of 41 on the second stop of the Zone 1 West season at Christina Lake.

Bennett, playing in almost perfect weather, shot a solid game and made few mistakes over the challenging 18-holes.

He carded an even par 72 Saturday to beat runner up Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake by three  strokes.

Only four players broke 80 on the day.

One of those being, RTCC’s Tyler McKay who won the 15/16 division with a 79, while Garrett Underwood, Champion Lakes, placed second with an 83, followed by last week’s winner Brenan Moroney, RTCC, who shot an 84.

In the 13/14 division, Ryan Fullerton of RTCC placed second behind winner Trevor Pereverzoff from Christina Lake who carded an 82.

The second event of the zone’s high school golf season swung through Creston Monday with eight West Kootenay schools competing.

Creston took top spot but J. L. Crowe had a very strong performance and placed third with a team score of 358.

Rossland Secondary finished two strokes behind Crowe for fifth place.

“The Crowe team is showing steady improvement and they should make a very strong push to qualify for the B.C. High School Championship at the Zone qualifier on May 19 at Christina Lake,” said zone president Rob McKay.

In the individual results, Rossland’s Ryan McKay won his second high school event of the year scoring a three-over-par 75 followed by Nolan Taylor of Nelson with a round of 79.

The Crowe team of James Booth, Garrett Underwood and Alex Rugg had strong performances, all shooting in the 80s.
