Solid finish caps off eventful season for Rossland golfer

For baseball fans, this coming week promises to be the highlight reel of the summer as Trail’s Butler Park gets set to host the Western Canadian Baseball Championships.

The 24th edition of the 2011 B.C. Seniors Games crossed the finish line on Saturday, in what was the most successful event for West Kootenay senior athletes in the history of the games.

Tufford and Betty Pilon from Okanagan Falls (in blue) gave Ruth LeBlanc of 108 Mile Ranch a high five after defeating her in darts and snatching up silver in the 55-64 ladies doubles competition Thursday afternoon; Curling cowboy Bill Ellis was a club champion in Castlegar in the 1970s but has since moved to Chilliwack. He’s competing in his first B.C.

Two former Trail residents returned to the same Warfield track where they ran their first race and launched their first discus.

The Seniors Games is becoming a venue for world-class athletes as Canadian records fell Thursday at Haley Park.

Day 2 of the B.C. Seniors Games brought more records to the Haley Park track along with some familiar faces. Betsy Rollins (nee George, in middle) is a former Trail track star who learned under the tutelage of legendary track coach Willi Krause. Rollins put that expertise to use as she ran to silver in the 100m sprint.

While you are either supporting or ignoring the seniors’ games this week, ponder their growth and what it may say about where we are, and should want to be, going: not just in sports but as a region.
